Hot Tub Filter Cleaning

As a hot tub owner, one of the most important aspects of maintenance is to keep your filter clean and well-maintained to ensure a relaxing and safe spa experience. A dirty filter can cause water flow problems, reduce water clarity, and even lead to health risks from bacteria build-up. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the steps of cleaning and caring for your hot tub filter, to keep your tub running smoothly and efficiently.

Step 1: Turn off the Power

Before starting any maintenance on your hot tub, make sure to turn off the power and disconnect the electricity supply. This will prevent any potential accidents while you're cleaning the filter.

Step 2: Remove the Filter

Most hot tubs have a filter compartment located near or under the skimmer basket, usually on one side or corner of your hot tub. Check your user manual if you're not sure where your filter is located. Once you find the filter compartment, remove the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions. It's important to follow the instructions carefully to avoid damaging the filter or the hot tub. In most cases, the filter can be turned counter-clockwise and it will unscrew out of the threads, which hold it in place.

Step 3: Rinse the Filter

Using a garden hose (we like to use a nozzle with a jet setting to increase the water pressure for loose debris cleaning), rinse the filter thoroughly to remove any loose debris or dirt. Start by rinsing the filter from the top down to prevent any dirt from getting trapped in the filter pleats. Make sure to rinse all sides of the filter to ensure that it's clean.

Step 4: Soak the Filter

Next we will need to soak the filter in a filter cleaning solution to breakdown the dirt & oils, etc.. Each solution will come with slightly different doses and soaking times, please read your container, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Eg. The cleaner we use, Pro-Kleen 5L Filter Cleaner, states 500ml of solution to be mixed per 10L of water, with an overnight soak time.

Step 5: Rinse and Dry the Filter

After soaking, remove the filter from the cleaning solution and rinse it thoroughly with clean water only. Make sure to rinse all sides of the filter to ensure that all of the cleaner is removed. Ensure all suds are rinsed away leaving only clean water. Once the filter is clean, shake off any excess water and let it dry completely before replacing it in the hot tub. It's important to let the filter dry completely to avoid any mould or mildew growth if not being placed directly back into service, in water.

Step 6: Replace the Filter

We recommend having 2 filters on rotation so whilst you clean the dirty filter and let it dry, you have a clean one to put in place. Once per month when soaking the filter in cleaner, swap them out. It will make for easier cleaning, and longer service life. Install filter back into the filter compartment according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure to secure the filter properly to prevent any leaks or water flow problems.

Step 7: Regular Maintenance

To keep your hot tub filter clean and well-maintained, it's important to perform regular maintenance. This includes rinsing the filter with a garden hose once a week, using a filter cleaner once a month, and replacing the filters every 12 to 18 months. It's also important to check the filter for any signs of damage or wear and tear and replace it if necessary.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your hot tub filter clean and well-maintained, ensuring a relaxing and safe spa experience. At TopTubs Grimsby, we offer a range of hot tub services to help you keep your hot tub in top condition. Contact us today to learn more!
